SAMANTHA FLANDERS!!

Samantha Flanders is 39 years old, lives in Palmyra, and is no stranger to running! Samantha recently won the inaugural Run for a Reason, an event she was using as part of her preperation for the Chevron Marathon. Samantha, originally from Melbourne, is a former Ironman Triathlete, Samantha has shifted her focus to running and has taken part in a number of Marathon events around Australia over the last few years. Her personal best of 3:03 set at the Gold Coast Marathon in 2009 is a time that would have Samantha finish right up there with the very best female athletes in this year’s Chevron Marathon.

Samantha has completed the 12km course at the City to Surf on 3 separate occasions, last year finishing 12th in a PB of 49:25. In 2010 she is determined to set a PB on the 42.2km course. Now well into her training program Samantha hopes to break the 3 hour mark for the first time.

“I’m really excited about taking part in my first City to Surf Marathon! I’m hoping to have a good run that produces a PB, and if that happens to put me among the top female finishers then fantastic”!

We wish Samantha the best of luck come Sunday August 29!

Inspiration on Day 100!!

37 year old Ed Wilcox from Mt Hawthorn is a first timer at the City to Surf. He’s no athlete, but in 2010 he’s got a major focus on the City to Surf. Ed recently underwent the harrowing experience of a bone marrow transplant at Royal Perth Hospital as he fights his battle with non-hodgkins Lymphoma.

After such a procedure, the 100 day milestone post transplant is seen as an important step in the recovery process. It just so happens that Ed’s 100 day milestone is on Sunday 29th August, race day for the 2010 Rebel Sport City to Surf for Activ. Ed has committed to take part in the Appealathon 12km Walk, and his participation in the event is symbolic of the journey towards full health in the near future.
“The 100th day is a significant milestone day and finishing this walk is not only a great challenge for me but something that will bring tremendous satisfaction.”
It won’t be easy. Ed fights post transplant fatigue and many other hurdles as he battles Lymphoma. The City to Surf provides a goal for him moving forward.
Ed is fundraising for the Leukemia Foundation as part of his participation in the event. He has already shot to the top of our leader board with his inspiring efforts.
We wish Ed all the best in his recovery and on his milestone day. To learn more about Ed’s cause or to make a donation please CLICK HERE.

30th City to Surf for Local Legend.

Barry Carter from Ashby Western Australia is settling into a familiar training program that will see him complete his 30th City to Surf event on August 29. A 55 year old Grandfather of 3; Barry has always taken part in the 12km Run, and set an impressive personal best of 49:45 back in 1986.

His favourite memory of the event is the annual spectacle of thousands of people running along St Georges Terrace as he surges forward up Malcolm Street on route to the beach.
Over a 29 year involvement in the 12km Run, Barry has never slipped out of Category B (estimated finish time of 48 – 58 minutes), and in his 30th City to Surf Barry has set a goal of once again completing the famous course in under 60 minutes.
Barry has seen the event grow over his 29 year involvement, but the feelings attached remain the same. He describes the event as a “fun” event, and looks forward to “Finishing my 30th City to Surf in one piece and playing soccer in the afternoon”.
“It is a wonderful achievement for Barry to be completing his 30th City to Surf in 2010. We wish him luck in achieving his goal of a sub 60 minute run and hope he pulls up well enough to don the boots in the afternoon” Thomas Wagner, Media Manager.

Charlie’s Angels – Appealathon 12km Walk

Charlie’s Angels are four best friends who are participating in the Appealathon 12km walk this year and taking part in the Activ Charity Challenge by fundraising for The Leukemia Foundation. The team consists of Laurie Davidson, Rachel Foy, Kim Parkin and Jess Henham-Barrow, all 21.

The four friends are participating in honour of Lavanya Scholes, who lost her battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia last year, after a 16 month fight at only 27 years of age. Out of 13 million registered bone marrow donors worldwide, none were a match for Lavanya. A worldwide search for a donor sparked media interest across the globe as people were being tested in a bid to save Lavanya's life, but sadly Lavanya lost her battle to the disease in December 2009.

The girls aim to raise $3000 to help fund patient support and vital research into better treatments and cures. To read more or to donate to Charlie’s Angels click here.

The Clydesdales - Westpac Half Marathon

The Clydesdales first ran together in the early part of the millennium when playing AFL for the UNSW-ES Bulldogs Football Club in Sydney. While they have now all hung up their footy boots, they dedicate themselves to staying fit by “plodding” along in races worldwide and will compete in the Rebel Sport City to Surf for Activ, Westpac Half Marathon in 2010.

With team members travelling from Singapore, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane, the team looks forward to their reunion in Perth. “We rarely get together and this event is a great excuse to catch-up, go for what looks like a beautiful run and importantly raise money for a good cause.”

The Clydesdales are proud to be involved in the Activ Charity Challenge, and are raising money for The Autism Association of Western Australia. “This is a charity we are passionate about and we are excited to raise money for a charity that provides the time and support required for people with autism and their families.”

We'd like to thank The Clydesdales for their support and wish them well on their travels. To donate to The Clydesdales click here

Robert Watson - Chevron Marathon

Robert took up running only two years ago as a way to lose weight and embark on a healthier lifestyle. In this time, Robert has lost 17kgs and conquered an impressive list of marathons around the globe. He has already completed the Chicago Marathon, London Marathon, and the 2009 Perth City to Surf Marathon.

Having taken part in these major events all over the world, Robert has a soft spot for his home town race and enjoys the tough City to Surf Marathon course. “I was very excited when the City to Surf announced a marathon and I ran my personal best time of 3hr 17min last year. It is by far the most beautiful course I have ever run and I aim to break the 3 hour mark this year.”

WIth his sights set on a sub 3 hour time, a mammoth effort for even the most seasoned of runners, Robert has found extra inspiration this year by raising money for Activ as part of his registration.

We wish Robert all the best and thank him for his support of Activ and the work they do in the community. To donate to Robert click here

Sylvia Broadbent - Appealathon 12km Walk

Sylvia Broadbent, a 34 year old Senior Building Surveyor from Pinjarra, participated in her first City to Surf in 2009 taking on the Appealathon 12km Walk. She enjoyed the day enormously, specifically enjoying the fact that anyone with any fitness level can participate. Sylvia doesn't consider herself a very sporty type but is already committed to taking part in 2010.

This year she has an even bigger incentive than just crossing the finish line. Sylvia has made a commitment to take part in the Activ Charity Challenge and will be fundraising as part of her participation. Already one of our top fundraisers, Sylvia is running for the MS Society.

"My sister has MS. Luckily for her and us she does not have any permanent damage yet, but it's the unknown that is hard to live with". Sylvia is currently overseas and taking walks with her sister finding 'geocache' "it's a great incentive to walk" Once she's back in Australia Sylvia plans to continue her walks and is focused on crossing the finish line in August as a personal achievement, but also with her fundraising goal achieved.

All the best to Sylvia and we wish her well with her fundraising efforts! To support Sylvia view her fundraising page here
