RUNNER PROFILE

Runner Profile

This week we're profiling training partners Eujay McCartain, Michael Skinner and Hayden Huxtable.

A Geologist, Petroleum Engineer and an IT Professional, Eujay and Michael have a solid athletic background largely focused in Hockey and have always had a requirement to remain fit and healthy, however Hayden states his running and sporting background has been particularly non-existstant until around 6 months ago.

Hayden: "I started some moderate exercise training about six months ago when I started training for a hike up Mt Kilimanjaro in mid-February this year. Rather than throw the fitness away I thought setting a goal for the City to Surf 42km would be a great way to keep me in form!"

All three are taking on the inaugural City to Surf Marathon and all will be attempting the 42.2km distance for the first time. Two of the boys have never taken part in the City to Surf and are looking forward to being part of Western Australia's biggest community sporting event.

Hayden: "After many years of procrastination, this will be my debut year for the city to surf. What better way to introduce myself to the event than with the inaugural marathon!"

Michael 'Skinner' took part in the Channel Nine 12km run in 2008.

Michael: "I highly enjoyed the training a month or two before last year's City to Surf... the day was great!"

With the Marathon taking participants on a journey around some of Perth's most beautiful locations Eujay reminds people that participants of the Marathon are actually taken from the City, to Nedlands, to the City, to Kings Park, and back to the to City before joining the traditional City to Surf course.

Hayden is excited by the introduction of the marathon bringing that extra piece of atmosphere and prestige, and is looking forward to running alongside world class athletes in the same event...

The boys have decided to take on the Marathon to achieve one of life's great challenges.

Michael: "I'm looking to improve my general health and fitness, to focus on and achieve my goals and (I think) running a marathon is one of those things you should do at least once in your life."

Eujay sights his inspiration as Michael.
Eujay: "My Inspiration would have to be Skinner [Michael], I wouldn't be able to keep up with the schedule if it wasn't for him being so motivated."

As for goals for this year's marathon the boys are hoping to come in under four hours "the closer to three the better" if you ask Eujay. Skinner's ideal is approx. 3.5hrs (5min/km). Hayden... He's sticking with the rookie card and has his sights firmly set on just crossing the finish line at City Beach.

So how's the training going?
Michael and Hayden have been having a few issues with shin splints but all are pleased with the progress in their training.
Skinner: "Training has been progressing well. I'm running longer with ease, and at a significantly faster pace." Hayden: "We've been running about 25k a week, and as the weeks progress closer to the marathon date hopefully we'll be up to around35km. The legs are quite sore and stiff so I'm ensuring appropriate recovery mechanisms are enforced."

Eujay, Hayden and Michael are looking forward to a well earnt beer after crossing the finish line on event day. We wish the boys all the best in completing their training programs, and in taking part on Sunday 30th August in the inaugural City to Surf Marathon - hopefully their first of many. If you live close by the City to Surf course and are not taking part yourself, get out and cheer on all the participants and help make this a memorable day for everybody involved!

What's your story?

Please feel free to drop us a line and share your experiences of what training for, running in, and completing the Rebel Sport City to Surf for Activ is all about for you.

PRIME HEALTH TEAMS CHALLENGE

Powerade No Sugar

The Prime Health Teams Challenge is new in 2009.
We are challenging teams to not only be the largest but also to run the furthest...

Prizes will be awarded to:

Largest Team - this will be awarded to the corporate team with the most team members registered across all events.

Furthest Distance - this will be awarded to the team who runs the furthest distance as a team.
That means if you have a lot of marathon runners in your team you'll be all over a larger team of 4km participants!

It's a great way to encourage team members to take on a longer event and really challenge themselves - or perhaps you can set up rival teams in the office and see who can go the distance?

This challenge is broken down into the following size categories:

Small Teams: 0-50 team members
Medium Teams: 51-150 team members
Large Teams: 151+

Prizes will be awarded to individual team members and to the team as a whole. Prizes and further details announced soon.

Creating a new team is easy - click here to get started.
