RUNNER PROFILE - GEMECHU WOYECHA

GEMECHU WOYECHA

Ethiopian-born runner Gemechu Woyecha was the 2008 City to Surf Half-Marathon winner. In 2009 Woyecha will participate in the inaugural City to Surf Marathon and is set to be a front runner. Last year's win saw Woyecha set a new Half Marathon course record completing the course in 1:05:40 in cool and calm conditions. Woyecha will be familiar with the second half of the new Marathon course from his 2008 run so we're looking forward to watching him finish!

Last month Woyecha, who has been recovering from an achilles injury for the past three months, won the Scody Great Ocean Road half marathon. He was elated to return to the road and complete the 23km trek in 1 hour, 13 minutes and 53.3 seconds.

Woyecha, who trains under Australian marathon icon Rob de Castella, said proper preparation was the key to his success. "Nothing secret, do proper training, jump in, just do whatever you want," he said.

Gemechu Woyecha came 8th in the 2008 Nagano Marathon and missed out on Olympic selection to Beijing by 1 second.

We look forward to seeing Woyecha run this year and we are sure he is looking forward to some competition!

ACTIV - GUIDING THE WAY FOR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Activ Volunteering

Girl Guides are known for their willingness to lend a hand, so it's perhaps unsurprising that the Carine Girl Guides have been helping disability services provider, Activ for over 14 years.

Each year, around 30 or 40 of the girls and their families volunteer at the Rebel Sport City to Surf for Activ, helping it run smoothly and ensuring a successful event for Activ.

This year, the group will mobilise again and according to group leader Jan Conway, there is never a shortage of willing participants.

"Everyone just loves doing it, so we never have a shortage of volunteers wanting to get involved. Community service is an important part of being a Girl Guide, and we find there is no encouragement needed with the Rebel Sport City to Surf for Activ. Once they've been involved, we notice they want to keep doing it. Everyone just has a ball," Ms Conway says.

Activ is the sole beneficiary of the Rebel Sport City to Surf for Activ and all funds raised contribute to maintaining and improving the services it provides to people with disability and their families.

To register as a volunteer or for more information telephone Deanne Dymock on 9387 0555 or email volunteering@activ.asn.au
