PROFILE - Tyler Byres

Runner Profile - Tyler Byres

27 year old Engineer, Tyler Byres, is a Wheelchair Racer who will be coming to Perth to participate in the Rebel Sport City to Surf Wheelchair 11km event.

Originally from Spokane, Washington, Tyler now calls Alice Springs home where he lives with his wife Analee and their two cats after basing himself there last November 2008.

Tyler is excited to return to Perth for the 2009 Rebel Sport City to Surf for Activ after his last trip in 1999 where he traveled from the USA to participate in the Australian Junior National Wheelchair Championships.

Byers was born with Sacral Agenesis, a neural tube defect. He's missing all the bones in his sacrum, the lower five bones in his spine. Instead of forming properly, the bones joined together in a solid mass that impeded Byers' growth, circulation and nerve development, leaving him wheelchair-bound and his legs underdeveloped.

Tyler Byers began racing at the age of 9 years old with his first major road race in 1992 being Bloomsday 12k in Spokane, Washington. He was a College athlete on the wheelchair racing team between 2000-2005 and the same college team coach between 2004-2005 whilst studying Engineering at the University of Arizona.

Tyler has had an impressive career so far citing the following as career highlights:

Career Highlights
USA Paralympic Team (800-, 1500-, 5000- meter runs and marathon) (2008)
USA Paralympic Team (800-, 5000-, 10000-meter runs and marathon) (2004)
IAAF World Championships 1,500- meter finalist (2003)
Former USA Junior National 100-m record holder (1999-2005), and 200m (1999-2004)
Course records: Rock 'n Roll Arizona Marathon, Phoenix (1:45:07, 2008).
Rock 'n Roll 1/2 Marathon, Virginia Beach (49:00, 2006).

Personal Bests

800m: 1:38.73    Paralympic Games, Beijing, China (2008)
1500m: 3:02.59    Rivera, Switzerland. 1500-m finals qualifier (April)
5000m: 10:22.03    Champions Meet, Atlanta GA (2008)
10K: 20:52    Nick Katsounis Memorial, Long Island, NY (2003)
Half Marathon: 49:00    Virginia Beach 1/2 Marathon (course record) (2006)
Marathon: 1:32:33    Paralympic Games, Beijing, China (2008)

We're excited to have some fresh racing blood in the 11km wheelchair event and look forward to welcoming Tyler back to Perth in August. We wish him all the best in the race!

VOLUNTEERING

Activ

Volunteering

Volunteers are vital to the successful staging of the Rebel Sport City to Surf for Activ. As the event has grown so has the need to recruit confident, quality volunteers who contribute to the safety of participants along each kilometer of the course as well as the start and finish.

With the addition of the new marathon course, over 900 volunteers are required on event day - Sunday August 30.

Most volunteer roles start between 6:30am - 7:30am and finish by 11:30am - 12:30pm. You will require your own transport to get to and from positions. Volunteers need to be between 15 - 85 years of age to be covered under insurance. We can team you up with friend(s) or family for most roles if you want to get a group together. Alternatively you can register yourself and we will team you up with other volunteers on the day.

Click here for further details on how you can be a volunteer on the day.
